Mary Magdalene Moss was born on 5 March 1889 in Forrest City, St. Francis County, Arkansas, a daughter of Mike Moss and Betty Williams. She married John Lemon Nelson II on 17 March 1908 in Pulaski County and raised eleven children with him in Owen Township. She outlived him by more than forty years, living in turn at Van Buren, Fort Smith and Little Rock before settling in Detroit, where she died in 1982 at the age of 93.
